When the black dog moved on,
I was just glad it was not me anymore.
It was chained up out back for so long.

I wore a path through the grass I let build up,
Grasping the severed chain and collar in my hands.

As the rain washed dirt from my eyes,
I waited in forests that made me feel smaller.
I could now see pointlessness in retries.
Trees stood tall, and lies stood taller.

When the black dog moved on,
I was just happy it wasn't me.
It wasn't me,
No it wasn't me anymore.

My blood and its rabid spit gleamed together,
A sick amalgamation in the setting sun.
A reminder of the deafening snarl
That kept me up most nights.

The nights where dreams convinced me:
"Happiness is not a fish that you can catch."
But wait, there's one more thing:
"Everything ends; nothing lasts."

The chain link fence rattled in between my temples
As my heartbeat increased.
I swear the clock did nothing
But laugh in my face.

See what you've done?

This is where
Others paint themselves on bedroom walls,
But mine are still bare.
I mulled over the moral
As the grass receded to the wind
The black dog will only beat you if you let it.

Put it down.
Put it down.
You've got to put it down.

Put the black dog down.
